Makoko Community, Lagos, Nigeria
This is Makoko, a community in Lagos, Nigeria, where survival often comes before ambition. I live in close proximity, and in places like this, to dream is expensive. Many children learn to fend for themselves long before they discover who they want to become. When your environment constantly reflects limitations, hope begins to feel like a luxury. Despite those realities, I found the courage to dream and push forward against the odds. I refused to let my beginnings define my future. This moment is more than a personal achievement; it is proof that our circumstances do not disqualify us from greatness. Great things can come from small places. Thank you to Lakehead University for helping make this dream possible. “The job’s not finished yet” (Kobe Bryant, 2009). There is still so much fire in me.

Icheri Sheher Metro Station in Azerbaijan and the entrance to the Old City
I grew up right there, behind those walls. After my mother moved abroad for a better life, I was 12 and I was depressed. I would sit in the arches of the fortress walls after school, looking out and dreaming of a perfect future. I also looked after my younger brother and walked him to school nearby. I used to buy him pens and cookies with my lunch money. Nowadays he tells me how much those small gifts meant to him and he remembers my love and care. Later on, my father took my brother and left the city, leaving me behind. My small world in the Old City, where I had found so much peace despite the struggle, felt so far away. Now, as an adult, I come here to meditate and find peace. Touching these stones and looking out from the top of the walls makes me feel proud of the woman I’ve become.

University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus
University of the Philippines (UP) is more than just a university to me. It’s where I first learned what it means to love my country, where I encountered my faith, where I met lifelong friends, and where my perspective on life was changed. Back then days were simple - we shared meals on the grass, played guitar, and sang songs until dusk. Studying here wasn’t always easy but UP will always be home. On weekends, the grounds fill with people on picnic mats and joggers trace familiar paths at night. It remains one of the few open spaces in my city where anyone can simply come. Manila’s urban plan is not blessed with parks; hence, amid the city’s hustle, this place feels like a sanctuary in the middle of chaos. I’ve come to truly understand a line from the UP anthem: "Though we wander to distant lands, the heart remains unchanged. Unchanged, it stays."

Taj Mahal, India
Standing before the Taj Mahal, I wasn’t just admiring its beauty, I was confronting my own unfinished story. The sky above was dark and uncertain, much like the phases I’ve gone through, where the path ahead felt unclear and the pressure felt heavy. Yet, right behind me stood something timeless, built not in comfort but through years of patience, sacrifice, and unwavering vision. In that contrast, I saw myself someone still in the process, still shaping purpose through struggle, still learning that real growth is never loud, but always consistent. What inspired me most was not just the story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, but what it represents beyond it, the power of the human spirit to turn emotion into legacy. That moment became personal. It made me reflect on the silent efforts I put in every day, the discipline no one sees, and the belief I hold even when results aren’t immediate. This image captures more than a visit, It captures a mindset. A decision to stay grounded, to trust my journey, and to keep building with passion. Because just like the Taj Mahal, anything created with true dedication and spirit has the power to become something lasting, something greater than time itself.

This place is deeply meaningful to me because it holds one of the most unforgettable experiences of my four years at university. On the very last day of my undergraduate journey with the Department of Sociology, BUP, years of hard work, sacrifice, prayers, and hope finally came together. I experienced three of the happiest moments of my academic life: I successfully completed and defended my thesis after months of fieldwork, writing, revisions, and pressure; my final results were published, where I graduated First Class First with a CGPA of 3.95 and the highest scores in my department; and I was awarded the prestigious merit-based Chancellor Scholarship worth around 15,000 BDT (approximately 140 CAD). This place will always remind me that dedication and patience can turn dreams into reality.

This place, in the northern part of the country, is considered to be the biggest flower plantation of Bangladesh, from where the flowers would be distributed all over the flower markets of the northern and southern part of Bangladesh. The picture was shot when I was working in BRAC International in 2023. I had to visit the Jessore region to attend a government session on Early Childhood Development. Our team of three was supposed to conduct a rigorous session on ECD for seven days. It was winter time, and being away from family made us a little bit flustered, so we decided to visit the flower plantation area, which was only 10 KM away from our workstation. We, along with all our students (about 30 of them), visited the place. The enchanting view of the flowers made our day and it made our mood back for work again. The whole seven day tour was very pleasant for us. I was very honoured to be able to work with the government officials who work at the policy level. The whole team was very pleased to be able to attend, and my name was discussed at the policy level and throughout social media as a prominent ECD practitioner. I will always cherish my early days working with BRAC International. The capture was the small effort to cherish all the memories I have already left behind. BRAC International has given me the opportunity to work for the community and enjoy the beautiful scenic country I will always LOVE!

Lakeside walkway beside the National Parliament Complex, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh
I first came here in 2006 as a teenager with big dreams. Over the next 19 years, I returned here with different companions at different stages of life: classmates during my two undergraduate studies, friends and colleagues during stressful career years, and later my wife and child after marriage and fatherhood. I spent countless afternoons here discussing studies, careers, technology, politics, and life with friends. Years later, I walked along the same lakeside helping my toddler learn how to walk. While my responsibilities, dreams, and circumstances constantly changed, this peaceful place remained familiar and comforting. To me, it is a living timeline of my growth, resilience, relationships, and continuing journey toward new opportunities and higher education.

Chowmahalla Palace feels less like a monument and more like a memory preserved in stone. The first time I walked through its gates, the noise of Hyderabad seemed to disappear. Sunlight spilled across marble floors, fountains whispered softly, and the chandeliers above the grand halls glowed with quiet elegance. Every corner carried the feeling of another era still alive within the city. What moves me most is how the palace remains calm while everything around it changes. In Hyderabad, a city of traffic and glass towers, that is forever reinventing itself, Chowmahalla reminds us that history is not distant. It lives through the places that continue to make us pause, reflect, and remember.

On the 6th of March, 1957, Ghana gained independence from colonial rule. This was successful through hard work and determination. I went to the Locate festival in Karachi, Pakistan with my younger brother to celebrate the arrival of Eid. Being born and raised in Karachi, this photo is a testament to the liveliness in the hearts of Karchiites. The Locate festival is special because it brings people together to celebrate food, art, music, and culture, while also supporting small businesses and local artisans by giving them a platform to share their work. It reminds me how even in a busy city, there are spaces where people pause, connect, and celebrate life together. I still remember walking through the stalls with my younger brother (he bought me cute hand-made earrings), stopping to look at handmade items and listening to the music in the background. As a pupil in this remote community, I sometimes went to school barefoot and with few writing materials, like other pupils. However, there was a memorable occasion when a public-spirited individual visited and gifted us valuable academic materials, and that singular act of kindness stuck with me. I decided that I must emulate that individual's kindness and ensure that the pupils who are schooling here don't share my experience. I love this city dearly, even though my feelings about it are complicated. My perception of it has shifted immensely since 2020 and continues to do so. We've been through a lot in the last six years, but something that has always grounded me is the community. Even when times are tough, Minneapolis residents continue to show their strength of character. They support one another and can often be seen finding joy and whimsy together in nature. The true importance of this moment was my role as a cultural ambassador. I hosted colleagues from the Netherlands who were in Ghana for their data collection. Official advisories labeled the area a “Red Zone,” warning travellers of high risk. I led my friends into the heart of my hometown to show them the soul of the North that the headlines often miss. They even joined me in touching the crocodiles. This is a testament to the power of representation. When we lead with pride in our roots, we can bridge the world.

As I prepare to move away, a bittersweet feeling hits me because I will deeply miss this midnight shore, the warm breeze, and the comfort of these waves. This beach taught me to find peace before a big change. As I leave Chennai for the cold Canadian winters, I will carry the strength and calm found on this sand into my next chapter.

Where I belong, dreaming isn't considered an option for girls; instead, societal criteria decide our paths. But I chose to dream of the acme of mountains. This photo is from Sajek Valley, where the mountains seem to meet the clouds. That height changed me. It showed me a world more beautiful than I ever imagined. Life hasn't been easy. When I received my offer from Lakehead University, I was faced with several questions about how I would survive in a foreign country. I didn't give up on my dreams because I'm not afraid of making mistakes. I only fear the regret of a missed opportunity. As the first in my bloodline to study abroad, I am opening a door I promise to keep open for those behind me. I don’t know exactly where I am headed, but I know I will enjoy every step while carrying my roots with me.

Opol Beach, Opol, Misamis Oriental (near Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines)
This photo was taken at Opol Beach, and it represents one of my most meaningful memories from living abroad. On my birthday, a group of friends surprised me with food, cake, and music — a celebration I never expected so far from home. What made it truly special was realizing how much I had in common with the people I met in the Philippines. As someone from Mexico, I expected to find a completely different world, but instead, I found shared values, similar traditions, the same sense of humor, and people who dreamed of the same things I did. That experience changed the way I see the world. No matter how far apart we are, there will always be people out there who feel like home. Opol Beach is where that realization truly hit me, and it will stay with me forever.

The Garba venue is widely known for hosting one of the largest and most vibrant Navratri celebrations in India. Every year during Navratri, this place comes alive with music, lights, and traditional outfits. Every year, I was really excited for this festival because I love to wear new clothes, kurtas, and traditional outfits and play Garba for more than 3–4 hours without feeling tired. One of my favorite memories here was dancing with my friends and family late into the night while surrounded by the vibrant atmosphere and festive spirit. The sound of the dhol (a drum or large drum), the colorful decorations, and the excitement in the crowd created a feeling I will never forget. This place reminds me of my roots, my culture, and the happiness of celebrating traditions with the people I care about.

Barrie, Ontario, Canada
This photo was taken during my very first days in Canada, when I had just arrived in Barrie. Everything felt new, unfamiliar, and honestly a little overwhelming. I remember walking through downtown, taking in the lights, the atmosphere, and the quiet energy of the city, wondering what this new chapter of my life would look like. Barrie is meaningful to me because it’s not just where I arrived it’s where I grew, struggled, adapted, and started feeling like I belong in Canada. It was the first place in Canada where I truly started building my life from scratch. I lived here for more than a year, and slowly it became my comfort zone. The lake, the cold weather, the familiar routes made me feel settled. It’s where I learned independence, adapted to a new country. One memory that stands out is when I had to leave Barrie for studies in Thunder Bay for Lakehead University. I remember feeling lowkey unhappy because I didn’t want to leave this city. At that same time, I found out that the Barrie STEM Hub was opening, which honestly made me really happy. I asked for a transfer, and the university was very supportive. They approved it smoothly, and that moment meant a lot to me.

This is my beloved place, Swayambhunath Stupa, where I grew up. Here, I have not only experienced religious faith but also peace. Since the age of 3, being carried by my grandfather in his arms or reaching up to hold his hand, this place has always been at the core of my memory in a sea of moments. We were like best friends and regularly went there to relax. But after the passing of my grandfather, I didn't go to Swayambhu for a long time. Slowly, however, as they say, time heals. I started going there to face my emotions and cherish the moments I had shared with him. It is a place I always return to, whether I am happy or sad. In good times, I go there to pray and remember my grandfather. In difficult times, I go to find serenity. Sitting among the stupas with the gentle wind has always healed my heart.

This photo was taken during fall 2024 on one of our Environmental Technology field trips with Georgian College. What makes this place special to me is how real it felt. Standing in the water with my field notebook, surrounded by quiet forest and open sky, it didn’t feel like a classroom anymore, it felt like purpose. I remember feeling calm, present, and genuinely happy, like everything I’ve been working toward was finally making sense. This moment matters to me because it’s when environmental studies stopped being just theory and became something I could feel and experience. It reminded me why I chose this path - to be out here, learning from and working with the environment, not just studying it from a distance. Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the simplest ones, and this was one of them!

Ronald McDonald House in Surco
This photo was taken at the Ronald McDonald House in Surco. This "House" is in reality an organization which host families who must move from their homes for their child's medical treatment. I was a part of the volunteers at the time and we'd help keep the house in order and clean for the families. We also helped with other tasks, depending on what they needed that day. This is a special place for me, because it made me grow as a person. Most of the time I was trapped in my own bubble without noticing other people's struggles, but Ronald McDonald House made me expand my horizons and create new perspectives not only of life, but also of ideology and beliefs. I meet incredible people there, but most importantly I meet different kinds of people that did not share my reality and helped me see the world with different eyes. It made me conscious of the world. The House taught me a lot because the supervisor had me do all types of things, so that I started to question myself on what I am, and what type of person I wanted to be...it made me curious. Curious about myself and about other people, their beliefs, religion, and experiences. I don't want to exhaust my curiosity.

This is one of the most beautiful roads in the region, surrounded by the scenic beauty of rolling hills and the serene waters of Kaptai Lake. Kaptai Lake holds deep significance for this region. The lake was formed when a dam was built to generate hydroelectric power, a project that came at a great cost, as it submerged the heartland of the Indigenous Chakma community, including the palace of the ancient Chakma kingdom. Today, it thrives as a fishing and tourist hub, yet carries the weight of that history beneath its waters. My first visit here was with a close group of friends. That trip became one of my most cherished memories not just for the beauty of the place, but because one of those friends is no longer with us. It was the last journey we shared together before he passed away. Now, every time I return to Kaptai, his memory comes alive. I see the same hills, the same water, and I miss him deeply.

In that very room, I read and put to life my first ever script, based on a friendship heartbreak I experienced, which I later on directed and scored. I am a true believer though, that what makes a place special, is the people you share it with. If it wasn't for Ms. Rosaura, that room would feel very different. She taught me how to continue to embrace my emotions and the sometimes out of reach dreams I've had. She showed me that they really aren't that far away and that if I put my mind to it, I can achieve anything. I hope everyone is able to find a place like my film class.

We have had friends come celebrate with us on many occasions. The most memorable event we hosted at our home was in March 2017 when we welcomed our baby girl, who is now 9 years old. This is the place she has known as home all her life, and she loves it here. This place is special to me because it is my safe place, my comfort zone, it is my most favourite spot in the world, because here, I get to be me with no judgments.

I remember kneeling beside these flowers, gently touching their petals as the world moved quietly around me. In that moment, everything felt still. It was not just a place it was a pause in life. In a world full of noise and pressure, Nakamura Park gave me something rare: peace. It taught me that happiness is not always something we chase far away; sometimes, it exists in small, silent moments. Whenever I feel lost or overwhelmed, I return to that memory. It reminds me that growth takes time, patience, and care just like these flowers.

I have visited several stadiums, but MKO Abiola Stadium is special to me because it was the first place I witnessed an international football event. I watched the Nigeria Super Falcons play against the Benin Republic in the final round of the WAFCON qualifiers. Before that, I had attended many sporting events there, especially during the National Sports Festival (Gateway Games). One experience I will never forget was the opening ceremony when ASA sang the Nigerian National Anthem and the Ogun State anthem. It was very emotional because the whole stadium, with over ten thousand people, was singing along with her. The atmosphere and energy in that moment was unforgettable.

Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, India
This photo was taken at Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. I was standing near the lakeside railing, and you can clearly see the 120 foot tall gold-plated Lord Shiva statue right in the middle of the lake. It’s a very well-known spot in the city and easy to recognize if you’ve ever been there. Sursagar Lake feels very close to me because it’s one of those places where I can just be myself without any noise in my head. I still remember standing there one evening, watching the sun slowly go down behind the Shiva statue, and everything around me felt calm for a moment. The breeze was light, the water was quiet, and I didn’t feel any stress at all. I’ve also spent simple moments there with friends, just talking about random things and laughing without worrying about anything else. It may look like just a lake to others, but for me it’s a place where I feel relaxed, clear, and connected to something peaceful inside.

This is a photo of my childhood friends and me at the Fox Run Mall (I'm in orange!), for the final time right before it was torn down. Coming from a small town in a small state with not much to do, my friends and I often came to this mall to wander around in circles, and window shop stores we never had any money to actually buy from. For an ugly little mall, it was a very important, nostalgic location for us, and it was sad seeing it in such a desolate state with many many closed stores, dimmed lights, and the lowest customer turnout I had ever seen. It possibly represented an end to our childhood, as just a few months later I was accepted to Lakehead and now am moving out of my small town for the first time ever into a completely new country.

That happened 13 years ago. We have been married for the last 9 years, and every year we visit this place to reminisce about our first meeting. Whenever we feel bored or tired of our hectic life, we choose to go to Cox’s Bazar. Each time we go, we experience something new—whether it’s a new seafood restaurant, a hotel, or a tourist spot. Family home - Nairobi, Kenya
This driveway is where my family’s future truly began. The image was captured on the very day we moved into the home where I would spend my teenage years. It is profoundly sentimental because it was the exact moment four generations of my family converged, where my grandmother first held my newborn brother, Gwiza. Standing there amidst the boxes and the scent of a new beginning, I felt the immense weight of the community and family that raised me. This location is the spark for my ambition; it reminds me that the engineering and innovation I seek to study are tools I must bring back to Kenya. I want to give back to the community that supported my upbringing by creating the same sense of security and progress for others that I felt on that first day in our new home.

It may sound incredible why I chose a hospital as my memorable place. Well, this is the place where my final decision to become a nurse was taken. Due to nationwide strike action by nurses in my country last year, I became an emergency care-giver to my Mother in-law who was hospitalized there since nursing services were suspended. The experience spurred a lot of emotions in me and also showed me how a little smile and care to those in pains go a long way to restore hope that was already lost. There and then, I decided that I must be involved in the healing process of patients especially those that need critical care. Anytime I pass this hospital, I am always reminded that my journey to Lakehead university began from there.

Laguna El Guayabal, located in La Montañita
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," my mother used to say. Truth be told, there seemed to be nearly nothing beautiful about Laguna El Guayabal. The grass was pale, and the lagoon was dry. My family lives on the outskirts of Santa Rosa, 4 minutes away from the site. That means we had to drive beside it each day to get to the city. And every day, I watched the lagoon grow bleak. That was until Hurricane Iota hit. Afterwards, the grass became greener, and the lagoon nearly flooded the surrounding settlements, so much so that most drivers would avoid that road entirely, but not my family. We came home with muddy car doors and stained clothes, but also with a deep appreciation for the place's newfound beauty. El Guayabal is more than water; it's the aftermath of something powerful.

Olumo Rock is a mountain in south-western Nigeria and serves as history of the Egba people in the 19th century. The rock itself serves as protection for the Egba people during intertribal wars. I was told by the tourist guide that the Egba’s then do hide under the rock whenever they are running from dangers and according to him, despite how high the rock is (409ft above sea level), no one has ever fallen. Some traditional worshippers are living under the rock to date (I saw them myself). It’s a very nice place to be as it depicts lots of history. It was said that the city of Abeokuta today started from there. I would love to visit there again.

This is the day my husband came to pay my bridal price, and take me with him. From here, he started our journey to Canada. That day began with the soft hum of our Igbo Nigeria tradition and ended with the quiet realization that I was being honoured in the most profound way. The air was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and anticipation as our two families gathered—not as strangers negotiating a deal, but as two worlds finally merging into one. The sweetest moment wasn't when the items were accepted, but when our eyes met amidst the chaos of the celebration. In that look, there was no talk of "buying" or "owning"—only the promise of partnership. He wasn't just fulfilling a cultural requirement; he was choosing me, proudly and publicly, in front of everyone who mattered to us.
